Some tassel sets are not for the wrist this kind is one of them. They have a ring built in, its purpose is to hold the fan closed. Stephanie Flora made this one for her turkey feather fan. She matched the tassels on her 1860s dress.
This fan was made on one of my cherry wood sticks. It has been modified in two ways. Steph drilled holes for decoration and slots for the purple ribbon that controls this Brisé fan.
The covered beads hang off a twist cord made of two strands of cotton cord the middle of which is added to the loop at the top of the “d” ring. Each of the covered and beaded beads terminates a single cord. The loop in the middle is made by braiding three strands of the cord the ends of the cord is worked into the loop. Then the loop is sewn on to the twist cord at the correct distance from the metal loop it is added to.
This is how the fan looks when it’s closed. The loop hits just below the upper ribs where the feathers start.
Here it is in close-up.
This angle on the loop does show that the braided loop is thicker where it attaches to the twist cord. That is because the 3 cords that make the braid overlap.
