There are so many hair products if you have never done period hairstyles it can be overwhelming. Below are some of the things Laurie and I used in our photo shoot. I’ve marked the different clips and pins so we are on the same page with the names. I know sometimes they are referred to differently.

I recommend this braiding hair “Rastafri Freed’m-silky-Braid”. It is cheep and looks fairly real. There are three types of braiding hair. 1) low heat synthetic like this. You can steam it or iron it (Iron set on the lowest setting you can and still use your steam) to relax it and chill it to set. 2) A high heat synthetic (you can use curling irons for styling) which is more expensive and a little shiner. 1) and a synthetic hair (the same fiber as 1) that is wavy and much more difficult to comb thru. Real human hair does not come in braiding hair because breading hair is over 40″ long.

Both bobby pins and hairpins come in different sizes and thickness of the metal. The more you need the hold the larger one to use. The very light weight hairpins are only for holding a curl into place. They will slip out with gravity unless you pinch them while you are pushing them in so they can string back to their natural “V’ shape when in place.

From the left: Hair spray, Dry shampoo (some times synthetic hair can be shinny and a spray of this can nock down the shine), pomade (used to smooth hair) and a hair net. Hair nets come in several colors I use them over chignons and to store chignons.

This is Laurie Tavan’s shelf of Supplies. In front, Long 3/4″ curlers for setting sausage curls, hair nets, super stretch covered rubber bands, pomade for smoothing hair. On the back wall from the left, a water bottle (stay hydrated), a super hold hair spray, a coconut oil dry shampoo, another firm holding hair spray and a finishing spray for synthetic hair. Below a curling iron.
