Men’s or Women’s 1600s to Early 1800s Style Tall Hat

This style of hat was worn by both men and women for a couple of hundred years with just a few alterations:

For an 1600’s and early 1700’s style hat you can enlarge the brim size anywhere from just an inch or two to six or eight inches all around. You would use pattern piece from view B. If you choose to increase the brim size by the greater amount make sure that you use ample heavy millinery wire on the edge. You can double up on the wire. Often in the 1600’s one side of the brim is folded up and pinned to the crown. If the brim is left flat and and inch or two larger View B made up in black wool makes a good Pilgrim/Puritan style hat.

For the mid 1800’s this hat might be a good choice for a merchant but not the most stylish men because the Tricorne became the most popular style to wear with powdered wigs. Just after the French Revolution this style became popular again as a statement against the extravagance of the aristocracy, the powder used in wigs was very expensive.

1790 to 1803, either style of hat would be a good choice for either man or women.

For the Regency and Romantic periods, View B covered with straw braid would make a good choice for men’s outdoor country activities hat, even for the upper classes. You could add an inch or two to the brim and leave it flat, do not shape the brim as shown on pattern cover.
