I did not get my computer controlled cutter to do cards but when I got a series of really nice Fashion Plates primarily from Ackermann’s Repository I wanted to use them for something. So, Christmas cards, why not. Everything was something I already knew how to do except one thing, the glue for the flap.

I mostly used double sided glue for everything else including, holding down the “3D”ish cover artwork and holding the sides of the envelope but I needed to know how to make glue that can be remoistened to seal the envelope. My local fabric/craft store did not carry any.

Because the edge of the flap is wavy I could not use paper backed double sided tape.

I found a Youtube video with a method and a recipe for a food safe glue. It has: 3 T white vinegar, 2.5 T (food grade not millinery) gelatin, 1/2 t granulated sugar and 1/2 t of any extract (I used Vanilla). I changed the method a little. I first soften the gelatin with the vinegar in a small microwave container. After 5 min. I heated the container in the microwave for 20 to 20 sec. on high. I Checked it often to see if the gelatin has melted (do not let it boil). I stirred until it dissolves fully then added the sugar and the extract. I brushed a thin layer on your envelope. If it seems too thick you can add more vinegar, a Tablespoon at a time. Also reheating the mixture for about 15 sec. to thin I even more to get a smooth not too thick layer. Make sure you use a new brush (I use my cake.cookie decorating brushes which have only been used with egg whites).

It does take a while to dry completely so, set them out so that they do not touch each other. I did tasted the glue and it quite vinegary but that might go away when it totally dry.

Done, I was lucky that my cards ended up 5X7″ and I could get a package of boxes to fit, I then used spray glue to add more artwork to the top.

Note: I did find by the time the glue got dry the paper had curled a bit so pressing it flat over a silicone coated mat with the glue side down will take the curl right out.
